Hot Lava + Hot Yoga = Cold and Stress Relief

Lifespan brands’ very own Tiffany Vargas is a yoga instructor at CorePower Yoga in the Chicago area. Last night she taught a special Hot Power Fusion yoga class with Lava® lamps, evoking the feelings of peace and harmony during the 1960s and 70s. The slow, relaxing flow of the Lava® lamps in the classroom created the perfect vibe for the theme. Tiffany also played some great old tunes from the era and talked about the way people were ahead of their time in the way they opened their minds and hearts to ALL people, no matter their race, religion or sexual orientation.

Hot Power Fusion yoga cranks up the heat in the room, which also creates a unique atmosphere conducive to stretching muscles more completely, opening up the skin’s pores and ridding the body of toxins. Of course, being in the bitter cold of the Windy City’s northwest suburbs, hot yoga is a great escape from the unpleasant outdoor temperatures.

One class attendee said she loves doing the hot yoga class in the later evening hours (this session was from 8-9 pm), especially on a cold winter night. It warms her up, loosens her muscles and relaxes her before bed. It’s a great way to get rid of the day’s stresses and calm your mind and body for a good night of sleep.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when preparing to attend a hot yoga class for the first time.

Benefits of hot yoga:

  • Detoxification – flushing toxins from the body through sweat. With the high temperature, from 99 up to 105 degrees, you will definitely sweat a lot! Don’t worry about it; don’t feel self-conscious about it. Just let it drip off. That’s what it’s meant to do. Don’t wipe it off either – that can close your pores. This will force your body to produce more sweat for the same area again to cool it down. If you look around the class, you’ll see that everyone else is sweating as much as you. Embracing the sweat is the secret to a successful hot yoga session.
  • Elevates the heart rate, making the body work harder. It’s a great cardiovascular workout.
  • Warm muscles – helps you stretch more deeply into the yoga postures.
  • Improves breathing, which can help with issues like asthma.
  • Focuses your mind, allowing you to develop mental concentration.
  • Helps to relax your body.

Before a hot class:

  • Don’t eat heavy foods before doing hot yoga.
  • Don’t eat within an hour of hot yoga class.
  • Don’t do another strenuous workout on the same day.
  • Don’t wear constricting or baggy clothes.
  • Don’t chug a bunch of water right before class. Gradually drink water throughout the day.

All I Want for Christmas Is a Lava® Lamp

santa-ltr-2

The VP of Sales at Lifespan Brands, Pat McCartin, found this adorable letter to Santa written by his daughter, Maeve, when she was about 10 years old (She is now an adult, and will surely love seeing this old letter!). Note number 9 – she asked for a Lava® lamp. Too bad her dad didn’t work for Lava Lite way back then. But I’m sure that Maeve got her Lava® lamp from Santa! Also very sweet in Maeve’s letter is number 10, she wished that “The poor children have a happy Christmas!” So cute and thoughtful for a 10-year-old!

Maeve’s letter to Santa made us wonder, did other kids ask Santa to bring them Lava® lamps? We were happy to find all of these letters online and wanted to share them. We hope that Santa brought all of these kids the Lava® lamps they wished for! And also agree with Maeve’s wish above, that ALL kids (and parents) have a happy Christmas!

Dear Mr. Rotund Santa,

Please bring me a new bike and Pokemon cards. I would also like a lava lamp. If it’s not too mush trouble, I would like some Legos.

Sincerely, Jaeden Becker

Dear Santa,
I love you!! What is your frabrit color? New elf pet, new elf on the shelf, lava lamp, Santa stuffed animal, elf on the shelf stuffed animal.

Gabby, second grade

From Katie O’sullivan.

Dear Santa, I hope you are well. If you are able to bring me a surprise and a lava lamp. That is all – thanks Santa.

Goodbye – oh and tell Rudolph and the elves that I said Hi.

Dear Santa,
How are you doing? Do your raindeer like carrots? By the way, how is Mrs. Clause doing? Are your elfs working harde? Well, anyway all I want for x-mass is this really cool lava lamp that has purple meatal and pink lava lik wed and purple lava in it to. Some more webkinz like maby two or three. And the webkinz that I really want is the kawala and the fire dragon. And by the way I will make homemade cookies just for you and I will leave some carrots for the rainder.
Love,
Cassidy Garcia

Dear Santa,

I would like a Intendo DS and a lava lamp. I deserve these items because I’m a very good friend. I would like to know how you deliver all the toys in one night?

Samantha Hoeme

Mrs. Alexander’s class

Dear Santa

Hi! How are all of your reindeer and Mrs. Claus? For Christmas this year I want a microscope, a telescope, a Barbie lip gloss maker and last but not least I want a lava lamp. My sister, Mallory Lesley, 5, wants a Barbie shop with me cash register, a Barbie rock n’ roll house, a bean bag, and last but not least for her a Kit American Girl Doll.

Caitlin Lesley, 9

Dear Santa,

Thank you for the presents you gave me last year. I would like a wii. I would like a playstation 3, dsi, xbox 360 and a lava lamp.

Love,

Ethen Allen

And here’s a cute Christmas story about a Lava® lamp that Jazz got from Santa, from the book: The Moon Sisters: A Novel by Therese Walsh

Published by Crown/Archetype. Copyright. A Random House, Bertelsmann company

The year I turnded six, Jazz got a lava lamp for Christmas. It transfixed us both from the second she plugged it in, with globs of oily crimson that rose and fell like sleepy dancers in a pool of green.

That’s how “Silent Night” looks! I’d said, excited to share what I saw every time I heard the song. I grabbed the lamp, but it slid out of my hands and broke, spilling all those little dancers onto the kitchen floor.

When my parent walked into the room seconds later to find Jazz boring holes into my skull with her eyes like some medieval torturer, Papa covered one of his own eyes to remind us that there were two ways to look at everything.

It’s not the end of the world, Mama said. Maybe Santa will bring you an even better lava lamp next Christmas.

Glow Sculpt Class by the Light of Lava

tiff_yoga

Tiffany Vargas, Product Manager at Lifespan Brands, moonlights as a yoga instructor at CorePower Yoga in Buffalo Grove, IL and other area studios. She worked very hard over the past year to get certified to teach yoga classes and has really enjoyed bringing her love of yoga, fitness and healthy living to her students. Tiffany also loves to use her creativity to find exciting ways to engage students in her classes and keep them motivated with the right music and exercise equipment. Recently, she was able to combine her day job of developing Lava® lamps at Lifespan Brands, with a special class called Glow Sculpt.

Yoga Sculpt is a high intensity, yoga class with weights and cardio. It combines traditional yoga postures and adds an element of weight lifting within each exercise. Fun, upbeat music is played to keep your energy up throughout class and having fun is a MUST! For the Glow Sculpt class, Tiffany dimmed the lights and added glowing elements for a new party atmosphere. The Glow Sculpt class was just like going to the club and working out. The studio had glow sticks and body paints for the students to use when they arrived at the studio and encouraged them to wear bright colors to class. Once they entered the room, the party started. Club music played as black lights and Lava® lamps lit up the room.

glow-dog

Students loved Glow Sculpt and asked CorePower Yoga to do it again soon. There is nothing like having fun when you work out and adding the element of Lava® lamps and glow gave the students another reason to come to yoga that night.

yoga_blog_2

Each month, the studios at CorePower Yoga have themed classes to give their students an opportunity for something different than the classes they regularly attend. Some include themed music and costumes, while others incorporate the core values and traditional teachings behind yoga such as chakras and meditation.

Mediation is another important part of mental and physical health that is closely connected with yoga. It is all about connecting your breath and slowing your mind. While this was not the intention of the Glow Sculpt class, elements of meditation are incorporated into cool down stretches of many yoga classes. A Lava® lamp would be a great visual element for anyone to use in meditation, regardless if you are doing yoga with it. The soft glow of the lamp will calm the mind and the slow movement of the Lava flowing up and down the globe could help slow down breath and regulate your heart rate.

Awesome Lava® Lamp Art Contest for Spirit of Children

contest

Together with Spirit Halloween stores, Lifespan Brands held an art contest for kids in hospitals across the country during their Spirit of Children events in October. Spirit Halloween stores provided costumes for all of the children and their families, pumpkins to paint and other fun, spooky Halloween activities. Lifespan Brands provided blank Lava® lamp pictures for kids to color, paint and bedazzle with glitter to make their very own custom lamps and enter in the competition.

Lifespan Brands received almost 100 wonderfully creative Lava® lamp pictures from kids who are patients at children’s hospitals around the United States and Canada. We must say, ALL of the pictures were so great! Lifepsan Brands staff loved seeing all of the colorful and imaginative ways that the kids decorated their Lava® lamps! There were bugs, animals, nature scenes, monster faces, rainbows, geometric designs and many more. It was very difficult to choose winners and we congratulate all of the kids who submitted their beautiful artwork. We wish we could give prizes to everyone!!

Here are this year’s winners, who will each receive the Grande Lava® lamp of their choice.

From the top left: Bumble Bees by Spencer, Blue Anchor by Nicolas Muniz, Blended Color by Ellie Everton, Rainbow Wax in Polka Dots by Elyse Pineda, Rainbow Volcano Explosion by Keilyn Hernandez Fawks, Red Vampire by Benjamin Mansfield

And we wanted to share more of these great pictures by children who definitely deserve honorable mention.

4_pics

But then, ALL of these kids, who somehow manage to maintain a happy and positive attitude while staying in the hospital during Halloween and the holiday season, deserve more than an honorable mention! They have earned our respect, touched our hearts and deserve the best health care from the childrens’ hospitals where they are being treated. Their families who support them throughout their sicknesses, take care of them and sacrifice so much for the kids are also truly inspiring.

8_pics

It was an honor for Lifespan Brands to be a part of the Spirit of Children events and so heartwarming meet these sweet, adorable kids! During this Thanksgiving and Christmas time, please think of all of the sick kids across the country and consider volunteering or making a charitable contribution to help them out. And also, remember to be thankful for your family’s health! We wish all of the kids a speedy recovery and a happy, healthy holiday season!!

Spirt of Children

Founded in 2006, Spirit of Children helps make hospitals less scary for kids and their families by providing fun during Halloween and funding all year long to Child Life Departments within children’s hospitals. Each year with the help of our vendor partners, Spirit sponsors and hosts Halloween celebrations in children’s hospitals across the United States and Canada. Members of the Spirit field team bring everything needed to have the best party possible from costumes and decorations to goody bags. Everything brought to the hospitals is donated by Spirit and our vendor partners. It’s a remarkable event that touches thousands of pediatric patients and brings countless smiles and laughter to children who might otherwise miss out on the joy of Halloween.

Additionally, throughout each Halloween season all Spirit stores conduct in-store fundraising campaigns. Last year alone we collected $7.2 million cash and merchandise donations. We have raised over $29 million for over 130 children’s hospitals since 2007. What makes this program so unique is that at the end of each season, every dollar, 100% of the money collected in our stores or donated by our loyal and passionate customers and vendor partners is given to the Child Life departments.

Spirit of Children chooses to partner with and support Child Life whose main function is to provide developmental, educational and therapeutic support for children undergoing medical treatment. Trained Child Life Specialists help children and their families cope with the many stresses involved when a child is in the hospital. While each hospital is unique in their needs, the money we collect and donate to child life has been used to purchase such educational and entertainment items as: Laptop computers, iPods and iPads, Flat screen TVs, medical education dolls and equipment, and toys designed specifically for children with physical challenges. In addition to toys and equipment, money raised has been used for such things as: funding field trips, adding staff to keep playrooms open longer and on weekends, developing rehabilitative art programs and weekly music therapy programs.

Get Into the Spirit of Children!

soc_logos

Lifespan brands had the honor of participating in a couple of Spirit of Children events held by Spirit Halloween in the Chicago area. The Lava® lamp team members visited Shriners Hospitals for Children and Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago Thursday, October 13. Both medical centers provide top-rated health care for children suffering from a wide range of conditions. The Spirit of Children program aims to provide some fun and entertainment for the kids and their families in the hospitals, and Lifespan Brands was happy to be included in this year’s festivities.

soc_party_1

It was so touching to meet the brave kids who fight tough diseases every day and watch them enjoy some fun activities! Kids were able to pick out free Halloween costumes from Spirit Halloween, try on masks, and have their faces painted. There were pumpkins to paint, creepy crafts, and some ghoulish games to entertain the kids and their families. Spirit Halloween also donated fun toys and crafts for goody bags that the kids could take back to their rooms.

soc_party_2

Lifespan Brands asked kids to get creative and design a Lava® lamp to enter a coloring contest. Lucky winners will be chosen from each Spirit of Children party across the country and will receive free Lava® lamps.
